Stretching across Central America from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea is the beautiful nation of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a peaceful nation with no political strife and does not even have an army! Travelers are welcomed warmly as tourism is a main industry. Almost 10% of the country is protected by the national park system. Costa Rica is located in Central America just 10° north of the equator, but close proximity to the equator ensures tropical climates year round. The average temperature along the coasts of Costa Rica is 80° F. This small country, only 200 miles wide and roughly the size of West Virginia, features a mountainous region sandwiched by coastal plains on either side. The unique geography of the country provides a vast array of beautiful natural features. The mountainous center portion of the country is home to beautiful rain forests while the coastal plains are known for their sandy beaches. There are only two seasons in Costa Rica, the summer or dry season lasting from December to April, and the winter or rainy season from May to November.
Visitors to Costa Rica will need a passport for entry into the country but will find that the country is very safe for travelers of all ages. Spanish in the language predominately spoken in Costa Rica, although in most populated areas English is well understood. Travel through out the small country is possible by rental car or bus and travelers will discover that it is easy to navigate much of the small nation while on vacation.
A variety of activities are available to vacationers visiting Costa Rica. The capital city, San Jose, is located in the center of the country. While staying in the capital, visitors enjoy visits to active volcanoes, bird watching, river rafting, or riding zip lines through the canopy of the rainforest. If those options are appealing enough, the hot waters springs of the mountain region are always popular as well. All of these activities are available within a few hours drive of the capital, San Jose, making it an excellent place for visitors to stay. Located in the mountains, climate of San Jose is always quite nice, never too hot to enjoy.
