Where can you find beautiful, tropical scenery, beaches as white as vanilla ice cream, and a welcoming yet vibrantly rich culture all wrapped in one? You are sure to find all this and much more upon planning your vacation to breathtaking Antigua. Antigua’s location makes the climate quite comfortable and mild. The temperature ranges around mid 70’s to mid 80’s with island breezes thrown in for good measure. Tourism is Antigua’s main source of income. Tourist traveling there is vital to their livelihoods.

Antigua Celebrates Culture

The culture of Antigua is primarily influenced by those of African decent. As you vacation, enjoy the sounds of the calypso, steel drum, and reggae. During the months of July and August, Antigua celebrates Carnival. Carnival is a mix of parades, live music, and offers a traditional barbeque.

Where you decide to stay, will widely depend on your budget. Rooms are as low as $50 per night, with more expensive resort like settings running around $400-$750. A private villa will run as much as $5000 per week. A room would be perfect for a couple that doesn’t plan on being around it that much. If you want something more all inclusive, then stay in a resort which will give you the freedom of having restaurants, casinos, and plenty of night life. A villa is ideal for a family or two families combined to share the expense. Most offer private pools/spas and are much like your own home with a kitchen, washer/dryer, etc. Lodging will simply depend on your needs and budget.

Staying Entertained

There is also a wide variety of activities to choose from in Antigua. The Botanical Gardens in Antigua’s St. John, offer an array of tropical plants, and flowers. The Hawksbill Turtle Preserve offers information on native species. For all the hikers, Boggy Peak offers a challenge and is the highest point in Antigua. There are also many historical sites like British Fort James and Barbada’s Martello Tower. This is only a sampling of the many sites of Antigua.

What’s Your Flavor?

The island caters mostly to a Euro-American style of food. Although becoming more rare, there are places that serve native Antiguan fare. Meals on average, range from $10-$20, with a night on the town costing around $70. What craving at the moment will determine which cuisine you will choose. Some popular native foods are black pineapple, roast pig, and cockles. Don’t forget an endless supply of mangoes, papayas, melons and many other succulent fruits. Antiguan cuisine, on the whole, tends to be on the spicier side. Wash down your meal with Wadadli, the local beer.

Whether your pleasure is sun and sand or exciting treks into old forts and ruins, Antigua will appeal to the adventure and relaxation seekers. As stated before, you are only limited by budget and imagination. Go see what the island has to offer because it is sure to be nothing short of paradise.
